Humanin is a naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the MT-RNR2 region of the mitochondrial genome. It was first identified in 2001 through investigations into neuronal survival factors in Alzheimer's disease models, and its discovery helped establish that mitochondria encode biologically active signalling peptides beyond respiratory chain components. The canonical form contains 24 amino acids. Research spans neuroscience, mitochondrial biology, cellular ageing and metabolic regulation. FAB Research supplies Humanin in a 10mg pre-filled metered research pen for scientific investigation.
Research describes both extracellular and intracellular activity. Extracellularly, Humanin binds at a trimeric cell-surface receptor complex involving CNTFR, WSX-1 and gp130, triggering STAT3 signalling. Intracellularly it interacts with pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins including Bax. Cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects have been reported across neuronal, cardiac and endothelial models. Observational human studies have documented declining circulating levels with age.
Humanin has a solid mechanistic literature across cell and animal models, with human data confined to observational studies. Discovery research established the mitochondrial origin and neuronal cytoprotection angle. Neuroprotection studies examined survival in amyloid and oxidative stress models. Cardiovascular research examined endothelial and cardiomyocyte models. Ageing observational work correlated circulating levels with age markers — no intervention trials have established clinical benefit.
- 10 mg total (single metered dose per pen)
- 1 dose per pen (10 mg total)
- Naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptide (24 amino acids), first identified in 2001
- Pre-filled sterile solution — no reconstitution step required
Storage: Store refrigerated at 2–8 °C in the original sealed box. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
- For in-vitro laboratory and preclinical research only — not for human or animal administration
- Human data confined to observational measurements of endogenous circulating Humanin levels — no approved human intervention application
- Extracellular receptor complex (CNTFR / WSX-1 / gp130): STAT3 signalling assays require appropriate controls to distinguish Humanin-specific from cytokine-receptor effects
- Intracellular Bax interaction: relevant for apoptosis model designs — account for Bcl-2 family protein expression in cell lines used
- Very limited human intervention trial data
- Animal and cell-culture studies: generally well tolerated across neuronal, cardiac and endothelial models
- No established adverse effect profile from human clinical trials
- Observational human data: declining endogenous levels associated with age — not an intervention outcome
Effects listed are observations from published research literature and are not predictions for any specific use. All FAB Research products are for in-vitro laboratory research — not for human or animal administration.
